Great debut for young Wisbech Wheeler
In his first ever time trial, 13-year-old William Horspool looked like a Wisbech Wheelers star of the future.
Last Tuesday, William and his mum Susan rode in the Spalding 10 miler and recorded times of 27.54 and 30.57 respectively.
Just before the event, the heavens opened and the race was put on hold. However, the downpour eased and the riders were off.
This was an excellent first effort for a young rider, especially as he was on an ordinary road bike, in ordinary cycling clothes without the benefit of a skin suit or TT machine to cut through the wind.
Fast forward 60 years and 73-year-old Wisbech supervet Roger Sewell along, with 60-plus youngster Tony Bye, raced rear Newmarket in the East Anglian Vets 10 mile event on Saturday.
Both took off into a howling headwind, hardly able to hold 17mph, but from the turn Roger was touching double that and Tony was skimming along at a similar rate.
As any TT rider will tell you: “You never seem to get back in fast bits what you lose in the hard bits,” but both put in good solid rides with 25.40 for Sewell and 26.20 for Bye.
