Youngsters enjoy Wisbech running sessions

Three Countries Running Club has been working with Active Fenland and Wisbech Town Cricket and Hockey Club to deliver some taster junior running sessions over the last three weeks at the Harecroft Road artificial surface.

It’s been a long time in the planning and the group of volunteers have been closely following the changing COVID rules.

Three volunteer coaches – Lee Johnson, Dawn Ball and Arthur Sargeant – have completed their coach training through England Athletics and since qualifying have been planning the sessions, supported by Sarah Clark on First Aid, Sandra Rhodes on registration and Lily Amps as their young leader.

Thirteen children between the ages of eight and 14 have taken part in running and jumping activities aimed at improving their physical and mental health by getting moving.

A big thanks goes out to March Athletics Club who were always on hand to give advice, having started their own junior running section a few years ago.

Everyone has learned a lot and the team are working on eight more events in January and February.

Keep an eye on ActiveFenland Facebook page for booking details for those sessions, starting on Thursday, January 7 at 5.15pm.

* Club Member Sarah Melton-Whitelam took on her own challenge. After her journey home from the last official club run before the previous lockdown, Sarah decided that she needed to do something to keep herself motivated during the three full weeks of lockdown and to ensure that as many people still got a run and to see someone, chat and have as much normality as much as possible.

It all started on the Monday after completing the GM10k back in November. The challenge was to run everyday for 21 days and to run with someone different from the club on every run, sticking to Covid rules. The distances varied as did the pace, running with people who normally run at 11 minute miling to those who slowed down for her from their usual six minute miles.

The last official day was the Hereward Relay where Sarah ran the second leg and her longest race to date of 10.5 miles.

Sarah ran for 22 days solid, covering104.5 miles over the three weeks and 127.5 miles for the whole month.
