Fenland town will be lit up for Christmas this weekend
This weekend will see the third Fenland town lit up for Christmas.
The lights will be turned on in Chatteris on Saturday (2) and organisers are promising a bigger and better show.
Established in 1985, Chatteris Christmas Lights are recognised as one of the best displays for many miles around.
In fact the market town’s display is even considered superior to those in much larger towns.
The Lights Committee is entirely voluntary and the results of their many hours of hard work, before and after the switch-on event, are enthusiastically appreciated by residents and visitors over the festive period.
From the switch-on until the end of the festive period the lights are on daily from 3pm until midnight so visitors can visit the town, wander through the main streets to enjoy them, and then drop into one of the restaurants, cafes, pubs, or take-aways for a warming bite to eat.
Volunteers, donations, and fundraisers are always needed to help keep the town sparkling each Christmas time.
The Christmas trees are selected from the Elveden Estate each year to feature in the churchyard and Market Hill Gardens.
The fairground rides keep the crowds happy, especially the children.
The event includes stalls with a festive feel, representing local organisations and small businesses, in the Market Hill area.
This year the lights will be turned on at 4.30pm on Saturday and it will be a pupil from one of the town’s primary schools who will have the honour to help flick the switch.
