Summer of prehistoric fun at Fossils Galore in March
Throughout the school summer holidays, Fossils Galore will be running a number of fun events, to keep youngsters occupied.
Fossils Galore in High Street, March will be offering lots of prehistoric activities including: Fossil hunting, gold panning, Geode breaking, shark teeth sifting, and archaeology dig with each activity the children will be able to bring a little something home with them.
There are over 12 activities to choose from, as well as discount bundles to make multiple activities cheaper.
Activities will be open from 10:30am on the days we are open and close half an hour before we close
Fossils Galore will be opening two new fun things for visitors to try: Fossil polishing – choose a fossil then polish it yourself and then take it home and gemstone hunting- try to find our hidden gemstones then choose three to take home with you.
The museum offers a range of real fossils to discover from locally found fossils to dinosaur bones from the USA, there is also a chance to see the most recent local discovery – a mammoth tusk.
In the preparation laboratory, visitors will be able to see the team of volunteers working on Indie the iguanodon skeleton, this has been a work in progress since 2017 and it is estimated at least another 10 years worth of work before all the bones are fully exposed.
Dates for the diary begin this Saturday (20) with a dinosaur fun day: displays and facts on British dinosaurs, live preparation of Indie the Iguanodon. Meet Ruby the baby T-Rex and the launch of the fossil polishing.
Saturday, July 27: Gem fun day: Discover the collection of gemstones from the museum vault and also the launch of the new gemstone hunting.
Saturday, August 3: Gold event: Back by popular demand, real gold in the gold panning, use traditional techniques to see if you can find real gold, and if successful you can keep a piece to take home. Display of gold and gold items.
Saturday, August 17: Space day: Explore the museum’s collection of meteorites; learn how to find your own meteorites even in your own back garden.
Saturday, August 27: Lapidary day: See how Fossils Galore turns rough chunks of Ccrystals into cabochons that are then used in jewellery. Choose your own piece of rock then watch it be polished before you take it home.
Saturday, August 31: Doggie fun day: Meet Crystal the fossil-hunting Beagle, live demonstration of how she hunts for fossils; see some of Crystal’s best discoveries.
