There’s nothing worse than falling out with your best friend and not being sure what went wrong, right? If you’ve been in this boat, you might relate yourself to Padraic.
I came out of the cinema a tad confused from what I had just seen, wanting more. Maybe it’s because the film was just so good, or perhaps it was due to what felt like a very abrupt ending.
Let me take you back to the beginning. It starts off pretty light-hearted with what appears to be a mysterious fallout between two lifelong friends, Padraic (Colin Farrell) and Colm (Brendan Gleeson).
It’s based on a small island off the Irish Coast, everybody knows eachother since the dawn of time and nobody seems to want to leave.
Farrell plays a likeable character that you can’t help but feel sorry for. At first, he wanders around the island looking like a lost lamb without his pub pal Colm who has decided he simply doesn’t want to be friends anymore.
I wondered if Padraic had something dreadfully wrong with him, but soon found out the answer to that.
Farrell’s performance was exceptional and convincing, playing a clueless, animal loving simpleton who lives with his sister, the only person on the island who seems to want to leave.
McDonagh has cleverly portrayed the Irish War of Independence quietly in the background of this film, to show that island gossip of friendship fallouts was more important to residents.
Characters would occasionally comment on the odd explosion, but it symbolised that island life is just so isolated from the rest of society.
The film was funny, yet gruesome, it took dark turns that made me cringe... it was more than a simple fallout.
I also really enjoyed the presence of animals – it really added a lot to the film, especially Padraic’s beloved pet Donkey Jenny. Animals were used to really show how loving Padraic is.
However, I was shocked when the film ended very abruptly. I was left confused and expecting one big final scene to round things off.
Overall, it’s a film that’s worth watching and leaves you thinking on the car journey back. It was funny yet moving and emotional all at the same time.
