March councillor launches appeal for essentials to help women fleeing domestic violence

A March councillor shocked by the number of stories recently involving violence against women has launched an appeal to help those fleeing domestic violence.

Hannah Orbell, a councillor on March Town Council, is hoping the town’s community will get behind her appeal for hygiene essentials for women and children seeking a safe place at a refuge.

She said: “ In recent months, I’ve been shocked by the number of news stories I’ve read regarding violence against women - whether there has always been this level or whether we are just being made more aware, I really don’t know. But it’s certainly made me think.”

Hannah continued: “There are some amazing charities out there who are supporting women (and children) affected by domestic violence but frankly, just one woman seeking refuge is one woman too many, isn’t it?

“So I’ve decided to arrange a collection of donations which I can give to our local Women’s Aid refuge. I’ve been in contact to see what they need and they’ve helped me compile a list.

“It’s not going to solve the problem of violence against women but it’s a small thing that anyone who is able to, can do to bring a little comfort to women who have had to flee their homes and seek a safe space.

“I felt that this month was rather appropriate since we’ve already had International Women’s Day and later this month, we have Mother’s Day.

“Any donation that people feel able to make would be greatly appreciated.”

Hannah added that many of the women and children turn up seeking help with only the clothes they are wearing, which is why donations of essentials are needed.

Items wanted are: shampoo, conditioners, shower gel, soaps toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorants, shower caps combs/hairbrushes, hair scrunchies, women’s pants, and children’s pants.
