Car crash cuts power lines at Silverhill caravan park

A popular caravan park in Long Sutton was left without power for nearly three hours after a car “ploughed” into a fence and electricity cables.

The crash involved a silver Peugeot that ran off the road and crashed outside Silverhill Caravan and Holiday Park at about 8.30pm last Wednesday.

There was no damage to the site but it was more about the inconvenience of repairs to the electricity supply

Engineers from Western Power Distribution spent at least five hours carrying out repairs to restore the electricity supply lost to the caravan park and one other customer.

An eye-witness living nearby, who asked not to be named, said: “It looked like the car was travelling north (towards Lutton) when the driver lost control and went onto the opposite verge of the carriageway.

“They crossed to the correct side only to then plough into the caravan park fence, damaging the local electricity supply.

“It resulted in a crew of at least six engineers spending several hours working well past midnight to make basic repairs.”

Trevor White, director of Pure Leisure Group which owns the caravan park, said: “There was no damage to the site, but it was more about the inconvenience of repairs to the electricity supply.”

A Western Power Distribution spokesman said: “We had a call from Silverhill Caravan and Holiday Park at 8.16pm last Wednesday to state that a car had hit electricity supplies and that there were cables everywhere.

“We had to go out and do some jointing work in order to make permanent repairs to the meter unit and the fuse switches that had tripped.

“The electricity supply was turned off a 11.15pm while the cables into the building were made safe and to do some repair work for the caravan park.

“Everything was repaired and the electricity back on at 1.50am.”
