Wisbech cemetery's celebratory open day as works are completed
Visitors will be welcomed to a celebratory open day at a much-loved cemetery to get a glimpse of recently completed works.
Wisbech Society will be holding the 'Welcome Back Open Day' at Wisbech General Cemetery after work funded by the Culture Recovery Grant, provided by the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport was completed.
The event will take place on Sunday, July 25 to give visitors the chance to see the freshly repainted fences to Lambert’s Walk, the replacement of a stolen section of fencing and refreshed paintwork to the chapel, which has also been deep cleaned internally as part of the work carried out by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
In the cemetery, several fallen monuments have been re-erected and others made safe and a secure storage facility now houses equipment – some of it new – used by the Friends of the General Cemetery in their tireless maintenance work around the grounds.
They are keen to recruit more volunteers to help in the rewarding task of keeping the cemetery tidy and ensuring it remains the thriving haven for wildlife that it has become.
The even will run from 10.30am to 4.00pm and guided walks around the cemetery will be offered at 11am and 2.30pm. Visitors will also have the opportunity to see inside the newly cleaned chapel and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of its surroundings.
The Friends of the General Cemetery will be manning a plant stall, while refreshments and Wisbech Society books will be available to purchase.
Admission is free, but donations to the Friends to support their ongoing tending of the flora and fauna are appreciated.
