St Wendreda's Church in March is raising money to fix the spire so the bells can ring once again
A church is raising funds to repair its spire so that its bells to ring again.
St Wendreda's Church in March needs the community and public help to raise much-needed funds to repair the spire.
The tie bars on the bells right at the top of the spire and the stonework around the tie bars have corroded and need to be restored.
Bells have not been able to be rung since January 2023 which for the church means that they have not been able to use them for weddings and special events and the bell ringers are unable to practice.
The church has had some investigations done as well as drawings and plans made up, and is now waiting on a quotation on how much the repairs will cost – this should be received in the next two weeks.
In order to get up to the spire there needs to be significant scaffolding because of the height – and because it is a Grade 1 listed building things have to be done in certain ways.
Helen Greenleaves, bell tower captain at the church, said: “We really want to get the bells ringing again because we have not been able to ring for just over a year now.”
The group of 10-12 ringers of all different ages have been having to go practice at churches in Chatteris and Ramsey.
Helen added: “We are all still ringing, we are just waiting for St Wendreda's Church to be back available so we can all get back to our tower.”
