Chatteris Town Council’s bid to improve safety at New Road junction
New warning signs are hopefully to be installed at a major road junction where there have been multiple accidents.
Chatteris Town Council has agreed that its Local Highways Initiative Bid for the coming year will aim to improve safety at the New Road junction with the A142.
If successful with Cambridgeshire County Council for funding the bid will see new signage including ‘Slow’ painted on the road, a refresh of existing signs including the ‘Give Way’ signs, and additional signs.
There had previously been discussions around reducing the speed limit along the A142 close to the junction but town clerk Jo Melton told councillors at their meeting on T it was unlikely to happen because it did not meet the necessary criteria.
She also said that the police were unlikely to support it. However, councillors also heard that the speed camera positioned close to the junction appeared to be having a positive impact on speed as data showed only two or three vehicles were recorded as speeding each week.
Mrs Melton added that there had been six crashes with casualties but no fatalities on or near the junction.
It was unanimously agreed to apply for the new road markings, signs, and a refresh of the existing signs as the council’s bid for 2024/25.
