Liberal Democrats select David Chalmers to fight for North East Cambridgeshire at General Election
The Liberal Democrats have selected David Chalmers as their candidate vying for the North East Cambridgeshire constituency.
David, who is a North Herts District Councillor, former mayor of Northam in Devon, and previous chair of the Devon Association of Local Councils, will be campaigning for action to tackle the cost of living crisis, the NHS crisis, and the sewage scandal.
Last year he was elected to chair the LibDem Federal International Relations Committee – involved with coordinating the party’s foreign policy and responsible for developing relationships with liberal sister parties around the world, and in particular across Europe.
David entered politics after a successful international business career, based for over a decade in Hong Kong running the commercial operations of the Economist Group CFO division across Asia Pacific, and his team was awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2002 for its pioneering work in China.
One of the co-founders of the Kaleidoscope Trust, David is a former chair and current trustee of Sunrise Diversity – the charity celebrating diversity, challenging discrimination, and changing attitudes in rural communities.
Fenland branch secretary and district councillor Diane Cutler said: “The North East Cambridgeshire Liberal Democrats are delighted to have such an experienced and well-known candidate to stand for the local party. David’s background, knowledge, and campaigning experience should help to substantially increase the Liberal Democrat vote locally.”
David said: “For years our area has been taken for granted by an out-of-touch Conservative Government that has failed to get the basics right and lurched from crisis to crisis - now it’s time for a change.
“Local health services have been brought to their knees, people’s mortgages and rent have skyrocketed and water companies have been allowed to pump their filthy sewage into our rivers and beaches. All this by a Conservative Government more interested in fighting between themselves than standing up for the country.
“Voters have been waiting for this opportunity to hold Steve Barclay to account for his key part in the disastrous policies that Tory Governments, under five successive Prime Ministers, have inflicted on the British public in recent years from Brexit to the National Health Service and to now our farmers and the environment.
“It’s time for change. Every vote for the Liberal Democrats is a vote for a fair deal. It’s a vote for a party that will stand up for our community and our health services.”
Seven candidates are hoping to win this constituency when voters go to the polls on Thursday, July 4.
They are incumbent Steve Barclay, who has represented the area for the Conservatives since May 2010, Clayton Payne Workers Party of Britain, David Patrick Independent, David Chalmers Liberal Democrats, Andrew Crawford Green Party, Christopher Thornhill for Reform UK, and Javeria Hussain for Labour.
