Wisbech mayor should ignore the Facebook bullies

Regarding the Wisbech Mayor, Coun Aigars Balsevics, having a week off due to depression.

As someone who has had a daily battle with severe depression for the last 45 years, I can fully sympathise with Aigars needing to take some time off from his public role.

Public figures having time off for depression is nothing new.

A few years ago, the Prime Minister of Norway had three months off work due to depression.

I have always had a friendly ‘hello’ from Aigars when I have greeted him in the street, although he does not know me from Adam.

Aigars’ ‘trial by Facebook’ via its Wisbech discussion forum pages, just shows the sort of people who inhabit such a forum.

The racism aimed at Aigars, who has done a lot for community cohesion by helping migrant workers integrate into our local community, must not be tolerated.

Hence, the removal by the moderators of Wisbech discussion forum of scores of posts attacking Aigars.

Thankfully, Aigars has resumed his public duties with a highly successful socially distanced fund-raising event.

As a sufferer of depression, I say to Aigars – don’t let the Facebook bullies get you down – just try and concentrate on doing your good works.

Good luck Aigars.
