Man in his 60s dies following flat fire in Wellington Terrace, Wisbech, off of Churchill Road




A man in his 60s has died following a flat fire that broke out in Wisbech yesterday.

Fire crews from Wisbech were called out to the flat in Wellington Terrace just off Churchill Road at 2.30pm yesterday – arriving minutes after being alerted to the blaze.

They quickly found the casualty, a man in his 60s, and got him to safety. They got the fire under control and prevented it from spreading further.

Despite administering first aid, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Motorists were told to avoid the area yesterday while fire crews extinguished the fire.

Fire investigation officers worked with police colleagues to carry out a thorough investigation of the property. It is believed the fire was started accidentally by smoking materials.

The case will now be passed to the coroner.
