Wisbech mum wants Clarion Housing to move her after spending £1,000s on mould blighting her home

A mother who claims to have spent thousands trying to remove mould from her social housing home is now asking to be re-housed.

The woman, who does not wish to be named, also claims the black mould, which is in every room of her flat in Stow Road, Wisbech, is affecting the health of her 12-year-old daughter.

Local councillor David Patrick said he was shocked by the state of the walls, ceilings and window sills and is also pushing Clarion Housing to take action.

The mother said she has been in the flat for 10 years and loves living there. But the mould is now getting her down and she cannot afford to keep spending money to try to eradicate it.

She said: “I have spent thousands of pounds on having it redecorated with mould resistant paint. I have undercoats put on which are supposed to stop the mould coming through, but nothing works.

“This has been going on since forever and I have had surveyors and contractors sent out to look at the property and they all report the flat is at the correct temperature and there is not excessive humidity.

“I have an extractor fan in the bathroom, a dehumidifier which I use all the time and I open the windows when I’m at home, but it is a ground floor flat so I can’t leave them open all the time because that would be like an invitation to burglars.

“I cannot fault my housing officer but nothing seems to be working. The mould is driving me bonkers and is making my daughter ill. She has colds all the time. Clarion say they will do more work to try to get rid of it but it is going to take even more time. To be honest I have had enough and I would just like to move.”

A spokesman for Clarion Housing Group said: “We’ve been investigating the cause of some mould the tenant’s been experiencing and to identify a range of interventions to address the problem. She has agreed a programme of work, which will be completed by July 22, and should hopefully resolve the issue, but should she still wish to move, we will work with her to explore options and provide support.”
