Wisbech will have too many Santas
I write to express my concern and annoyance with both the proposal that Wisbech Castle has made regarding introducing ANOTHER Santa to the town during the Christmas Fayre, and also the way Steve Tierney, who is a local councillor and should know better, was patronising anyone who disagreed with him on a Facebook page.
I was asked what I thought about the comments on a page called Wisbech Discussion Forum. I’ve only written to my local papers once or twice, but felt I needed to vent my frustration.
Wisbech Castle have decided to put on a Santa’s Grotto during the Christmas Fayre that I understand they will be charging for. Wisbech Lions traditionally attend the Wisbech Christmas Fayre and always do the town proud with their efforts – their Santa is always very realistic and the kids love his sleigh.
There is also an established Santa at the Wisbech Institute that has been run for years. Why introduce another? It’s not very creative or sensible!
From what I can tell Steve Tierney decided at the last minute to pretend to care what people thought on Facebook, I presume because someone had brought to his attention what a silly idea it was and he wanted to prove them wrong.
There is absolutely no need to try to copy what the Lions do, as they do it so well. The Wisbech Castle volunteers could quite easily put something on instead of Santa that they could still charge for if they wanted to. For example, an Elsa-themed event would be good for the kids and I know that my grandaughter would love to see that!
They could also do Christmas-themed face painting, a Christmas decoration competition and many other Christmasy-themed events. After all, they have so much space inside and out.
I just can’t understand why they would choose to interfere with a Wisbech tradition like this. Wisbech Lions have spent many years doing what they do. It’s shameful and surely some of the Castle volunteers have more sense than this?
