Chatteris Midsummer Festival will be back this year
There is exciting news for residents as the Alternative Chatteris Midsummer Festival is due to be held in June.
The popular event will be a little different this year and will feature the first ever Family Colour Fun Run in Chatteris when it takes place on Sunday, June 27.
Organisers of the festival, which will be held at Furrowfields Recreation Ground, have said that they are determined to put on some form of event this year, after the pandemic cancelled last year's festival.
They have been planning long and hard with a series of ideas put forward based on different levels of lockdown measures or the lifting of all restrictions.
A spokesperson said: "At the March meeting of the group a decision was taken on which plan to pursue and it was agreed to follow the scheme which means there won't be any festival events on the Saturday but there will be family orientated events on the Sunday.
"Guided by advice from Fenland District Council, it was agreed that it would be best not to rely on all restrictions being lifted on the June 21 as this could lead to disappointment and extra costs if planned attractions had to be cancelled at the last moment.
"So plans were made which follow the guidelines due to be introduced on the May 17.
"There will be no charge for the event, as the site will not be fenced, and in order to keep the temporary infrastructure to a minimum there will be no marquee or gazebos.
"Visitors will be warned that there will be no shade or cover but toilets and first aid cover will be provided.
"Chatteris Town Council, Fenland District Council and the steering group are aiming for a low key day of fun which abides by any restrictions still in place."
In addition to the fun run, there will be a dog show, live music and food vans. However, there won't be a parade, any community stalls or bar.
It is hoped the Colour Fun Run, which is being sponsored by Jacks, will prove to be very popular and will become an annual attraction. Participants will have to book to take part in the run in advance.
It is also hoped that families will bring along their own picnic blankets and set up a space on the field to enjoy the food and music whilst socially distancing from others if needed.
Any offers to help on that day would be greatly appreciated. To contact the steering group please either email chatteriscouncil@btconnect.com, visit the Festival website of Facebook page or call 01354 695166.
