Welney causeway closed due to rising water levels
Due to rising waters on the Ouse Washes a flood alert is in force. Norfolk County Council has closed the Welney Causeway (A1101).
Julie Foley, Area Manager, said: “We are working closely with Norfolk County Council who make decisions on road closures.
“I would urge motorists not to ignore the road closed signs. Floodwater can be dangerous and just 30cm of flowing water is enough to move an average family car.
“The Environment Agency Operations Team are monitoring rivers levels and working hard to ensure water can drain off the Washes as quickly as possible. As levels have been rising, we have been checking Welmore Lake Sluice on a daily basis to ensure that the Sluice is able to discharge as much water off the Ouse Washes as possible.
“Over the last week we have also undertaken some additional clearance of silt at Welmore Lake Sluice so that it is fully operational.”
