Wisbech Operatic and Dramatic Society has had its final curtain call
One of the area’s longest running amateur performing groups has announced it has closed.
Wisbech Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society has been providing theatrical performances in the town for 118 years.
But this week the committee and the society’s life members took the sad decision to close the group.
Posting to their Facebook page they said: “It is with a heavy heart that the committee and life members of WAODS have had to make the very sad decision to close down the society after 118 years of providing Amateur Theatre in Wisbech town.
“We would like to thank everyone who has supported the society during this time whether that has been on stage, backstage or as an audience member.
“Without you all the society wouldn't have been able to have run for as long as it has. We are keeping this page open so those who have been involved in the society can still access the photos we have in the online albums.
“The funds that WAODS had left have been spilt into thre and divided equally to organisations of a similar nature/non profit making organisations.”
Over the years the society performed shows as diverse as 'Ladies in Lavender’, ‘Kiss me Goodnight Sergeant Major’ and ‘Cats’ and loads more.
A more recent favourite was ‘The Vicar of Dibley’ which included Alice’s infamous wedding complete with Telly Tubby bridesmaids.
Over the past they have done pantomimes, musical evenings as well as their main productions such as ‘The boyfriend’, ‘Annie get your gun’, ‘Oklahoma’, and ‘South Pacific’.
