All White for March Squash Club’s plate glory

March Squash Club held its annual club championships at the weekend. Although the turnout was down on previous years, there was no shortage of drama throughout the weekend.

First up was the plate final between Gary White and newcomer, Tim Fitches. The game started positively for White as he took an early lead in what looked like a very one-sided affair. However, Fitches settled into the game and with his explosive speed around the court, was able to draw level at 1-1. White took the third, Fitches the fourth to set up a tense fifth game that saw White come out victorious.

Next, the men’s final between veteran and club captain, Matt Fiveash and junior underdog, Avison Warren, playing in what was his first ever final.

The game started with Warren looking relaxed and playing quality squash while Fiveash looked tense and made numerous errors.

However, it was Fiveash that clinched the first game. Warren took the second and the match went to and fro setting up a crucial fifth game.

Both players dug deep and with the match at 11-11 it was the younger, fitter Warren who was able to win by two clear points to win his first championship.

The handicap final finished the afternoon with both Fitches and Warren taking part. Both players were tired after the previous games but it was Fitches who was able to take the win.

Trophies were presented by chair, Julie Taylor, and everyone enjoyed celebratory drinks and a buffet in the cricket club after an action-packed day.
