Fenland featherweight Gill dazzles in latest title win
Chatteris boxer Jordan Gill has picked up another title after a stunning display in Peterborough this evening.
The unbeaten featherweight stopped Mexico's Emmanuel Dominguez in the third round to claim the WBA International featherweight title in front of a packed and raucous crowd at the East of England Arena.
After the fight, promoter Eddie Hearn said he wanted to secure a shot at the European title and even raised the possibility of a world title fight in the city at some point in the future.
Roared on by a partisan crowd, Gill was impressive from start to finish to continue his unbeaten career and break into the WBA's top 15.
Topping the bill at the JDNXTGEN show, he settled quickly into a rhythm against his Mexican opponent, who had only been stopped once in a 32 fight career before tonight.
But an early finish looked likely from the moment Gill wobbled his opponent at the end of the second round.
He knocked him to the canvas twice in the third before referee Bob Williams stepped in.
Before the main event, there was more to celebrate for those who had made the short journey from Fenland as Wisbech's Joe Steed made a successful television debut.
The 21-year-old super-welterweight outpointed Nicaragua's Miguel Aguilar in a four-round bout, with referee Howard Foster scoring all four sessions in Steed's favour.
Earlier in the evening, the Commonwealth featherweight title, which Gill has vacated after winning it impressively in London last October, was claimed by Nottingham's Leigh Wood.
Wood knocked out Ghana's Abraham Osei Bonsu in the second round.
