Creasey ready to lead Wisbech Town into new era
New Wisbech Town manager Dick Creasey is relishing the prospect of leading the Fenmen into a new era at the Elgoods Stadium.
Creasey was confirmed as the new boss – his third permanent spell in the hot seat – at the club’s presentation evening on Saturday night.
During his last spell in charge, Creasey led the Fenmen to the quarter-final of the FA Vase and a third place United Counties League finish.
But he admits there is a lot to be done before he can turn the Fenmen from also-rans into realistic title challengers over the summer.
Boston-based Creasey said: “The hard work starts now and it’s not going to be easy. It’s a massive, massive challenge but one I’m looking forward to.
“I’ve got to sit down with the players who I want to keep and also look at bringing in some fresh blood.
“Even the players who do stay have got to take a long look at themselves in the mirror and realise that their performances last season were nowhere near good enough.”
Creasey added: “We need six, seven or perhaps eight new faces so there’s a lot of talking to be done.
“There are a few holes that need filling. I’ve got to make sure that I fill those with the right type of players.
“They’ve got to be the right characters in the changing room and on the pitch, but the most important aspect is that they have got to want to play for Wisbech Town.”
Creasey admitted that he wouldn’t have taken up the post if he didn’t think he could turn the club’s fortunes around.
“This will be my last job in football, that’s for certain,” said Creasey.
“At my age time is important. There are a lot of managers out there who could have kept the club safe in the UCL and going from one season to another.
“But as a manager you want your team to be the best and also challenging for honours.
“If I fail to do that then I will be disappointed with myself.”
On Creasey’s appointment, Wisbech Town chairman Paul Brenchley said: “We are desperate for promotion and want Step Four football.
“We’ve got the facilities, we have got the supporters and now we have got the manager. This club should be playing higher-level football.
“The players wanted us to appoint Dick, as did the supporters.
“Even with the same team, there was a different spirit within the club towards the end of last season when Dick came back in.
“Dick will be assisted by Glen Maddison, who is a very good coach, and with his oomph and Dick’s know-how the future looks bright.”
Malcolm Clements resigned as a director at last week’s Board meeting. The club would like to place on record its thanks for his contribution during his time as both chairman and vice-chairman.
Gavin Clarey has been appointed as the new vice-chairman.
