Wisbech Town manager Seb Hayes desperate to make signings after BetVictor NPL South East Division loss at Cleethorpes
BetVictor NPL South East Division
Cleethorpes Town 2 Wisbech Town FC 1
Fenmen manager Seb Hayes is desperate to make at least one signing before next Saturday’s trip to Kempston after losing a couple of players.
Following a goalless first half, Sam Spencer headed the Fenmen level after 75 minutes after the home side's opening goal eight minutes earlier.
The winning goal for Cleethorpes Town came nine minutes from time saw them secure the points. All goals in the match were headers from set pieces.
Hayes said after the weekend’s away loss to fourth-spot Cleethorpes: “We played well and set up to keep it tight and play on the counter-attack after our poor performance in midweek (a 4-1 league cup defeat at Worksop).
“So I thought tactically we got the game right but we just let ourselves down conceding off two corners, really.
“It’s the first time we’ve conceded from those. We’re a good set-piece side, defending or attacking, but the timing of the goals hurt us.
“We were always in the game, although they had a lot more possession. I was pleased with our application but disappointed with the result."
Hayes added: “Ollie Gale is already out for two months.
"Aiden Bradshaw came back and injured himself in the warm-up on Wednesday so he’ll be out for two months; and Callum Traynor has left the club. He doesn’t want to play at Step 4.
“So I’m down to 13 players and I hope to make at least one signing between now and then. We’re using Tom Curtis on dual registration and we hope to keep him next week.
“We’ve been stretched all season. You speak to six or seven players and need to talk to six or seven to get one signing. It’s not only me: Setch (previous boss Gary Setchell) had the problem last season as well.
"We need to sign players that commit for the season: the squad's not what we want it to be.”
