Ten-man Wisbech see off Heanor to make it back-to-back wins in the United Counties League Premier Division North

Harley Murkin scored the only goal of the game but was then sent-off as Wisbech recorded back-to-back wins in the league for the first time this season.

Murkin, 16, came off the bench to volley home his first-ever senior goal for the club against Heanor in today's United Counties League Premier Division North encounter at Fountain Fresh Park.

But the youngster's joy, which saw him booked for taking his shirt off in the subsequent celebrations, turned to despair when he was dismissed for picking up a second yellow after a late tackle two minutes later.

The three points lifted Wisbech up a place to 13th in the league standings with five games of the regulation season left to play.

Leon Mettam's side weren't always at their best during a difficult afternoon in front of 219 fans and were just about deserved winners for their extra endeavour in the second half of a scrappy affair.

The Fenmen made two changes to the the starting XI that defeated league leaders Loughborough four days earlier.

Archie Wallace replaced Stacey Freeman, who had returned to parent club Stamford, at the back while Patrik Kacireck was given the nod over Kegan Everington in midfield.

A gusty wind and heavy rain made life difficult for both sides in the first half and it was Heanor who adapted better to the conditions in the opening 45 minutes.

Heanor came close to taking the lead in the 12th minute but Luke Pearson's fingertips and a header away from Arun Jones kept Joshua Craddock's effort from an Ellis Perry-Burdett corner out.

Kieran Debrouwer fired wide of the target shortly after before Pearson had to be quick off his line to clear some danger from the same player a few minutes later.

In the 35th minute, wing-back Amir Ward exchanged passes with Mettam down the left before delivering a cross which his manager could only direct wide in what was Wisbech's best chance of the half.

Early in the second half a long ball over the top from Jones found Conyard but the frontman skied his effort over the woodwork.

Mettam and Conyard then combined to set up Ward, whose drive was well saved by visiting goalkeeper Mitchell Leivers, while Pearson had to be alert to thwart Heanor substitute Jock Cockram at the other end.

Wisbech replaced Conyard with Murkin as the minutes ticked down and nobody in the ground had any idea about what was to unfold as clear-cut chances for both teams remained at a premium.

When Sisa Tuntulwana screwed a shot wide of the goal with just a few minutes remaining, Wisbech's chances of victory looked to have disappeared.

But Heanor's Perry-Burdett talked himself into being sin-binned after conceding a late free-kick and Mettam laid the resulting set-piece on a plate for Murkin to net with the sweetest of connections from the edge of the box.

Murkin was booked for taking his shirt off as Fountain Fresh Park went into delirium and, with the adrenaline still flowing in his veins, the teenager was shown a second yellow for following through on a opponent in injury-time.

The youngster left the pitch close to tears – but Wisbech were able to see out the remainder of the game with a man less on the pitch.

Wisbech Town: Pearson, Tuntulwana, Ward, Phelan, Wallace, Matless, Jones, Acar, Conyard (Murkin), Mettam, Kacireck (Everington).

Attendance: 219.
