Long Sutton HC Ladies 2, City of Peterborough 3

Peterborough sat second in the league with Long Sutton third so any result would surely be crucial.

Both hockey teams served up their best in a most entertaining game which witnessed five fabulous goals, numerous good chances for both sides, a string of quality saves by both goalkeepers, and a nail-biting finish, with Sutton fighting to the end.

But it ended with the visitors Peterborough just having enough of an edge over the full 70 minutes, to go away delighted with all three points.

Long Sutton Ladies were 2-0 down but showed great courage and character. Robyn Gribble replied twice, her first set up by Jeorgia Carr and the second superbly crafted by Leah Goodley, Carr and Leanne Woodhead before half-time.

Woodhead was denied in a one-on-one with the away goalkeeper.

With 13 minutes of the second half gone Peterborough snatched the winner.

Goalkeeper Lorraine Wallis said: “Look, we are disappointed but make no mistake we showed great character to come from two goals down against a top team who perhaps just deserved the win on the day.”

Player of the match: Gemma Parr, who was perfection throughout.

LSHC Ladies Second 0, Horncastle 3

Horncastle took the points with some fast energetic forward play and a strong defence.

The pace and passing of the two wide forwards was the undoing of Sutton and Horncastle were 2-0 up from passing moves in the first half.

In the second half they got another from a short corner, despite the best efforts of Julie Gray.

The midfield battle was fairly even, driven on by Katie Bedford, with Hannah Maris making some excellent tackles in the defence.

Sutton upped their game in the second half and created more opportunities, having the best of the last 25 minutes, but couldn’t find a way through.

Sophie Gray had a great game coming back after illness.
