Half centuries for Josh Bowers and Jamie Seabrook as Wisbech win for second week running
A second win of the season sees Wisbech Town up to fifth in the Cambridgeshire & Huntingdonshire Premier League Division One after Cambridge St Giles were beaten comfortably at Harecroft Road on Saturday.
After winning the toss, the visitors elected to bat and, after losing an early wicket, got themselves to 174-5 before a late collapse left them at 204 all out from 43.4 overs.
Josh Porter returned figures of 3-32 from 7.4 overs, Jonny Garner followed up last week’s six-wicket haul with 3-54 from 10, Kieran Haynes was 2-22 from seven, and there was a wicket each for Shalin Navishka De Mel and Joe Dunning.
In reply, the home side put on 40 for the first wicket, when De Mel was caught behind for 23 off 23 balls, hitting three fours and a six.
Fellow opener Gary Freear went for 29 from 36 balls and captain James Williams scored 27 from 41, but steering the side to victory were wicket keeper Josh Bowers and Jamie Seabrook who both registered unbeaten 55s.
Bowers got his runs from 88 balls, with five fours, and Seabrook from 66 deliveries, with eight fours.
March Town got their Division Three season off to a terrific start with a 138-run win at home to Ufford Park.
The home side’s decision to bat did not look a good one when when they lost openers Shae Pooley and Mark Estall for four runs each.
But Sam Robinson hit 25 from 41 balls, Toby Nulty 55 from 85 balls, including six fours, Brandon Phillips 38 from 44 balls and Lewis Welcher an undefeated 50 from 42 balls, with seven fours. Captain Callum Young chipped in with 19 as March posted 226-8 from 45 overs.
Ufford Park made a reasonable start to their innings, their openers posting 19 and 20, but only one other player reached double figures as they were bowled out for 88 from 26.2 overs.
Robinson took 4-16 from 4.2 overs, Pooley 2-17 from nine, Young 2-29 off nine and Harry Lefevre 1-21 from four.
There was also a winning start for Chatteris, who annihilated Telugu Association of Cambridge in CCA Senior League Division Two.
After being put into bat, the Cambridge side were skittled out for just six runs from 8.4 overs, with six of their side failing to get off the mark.
James Wood finished with the incredible figures of 9-5 from 4.4 overs, with two maidens, and Andy Wool 1-1 from his four. In reply, the home side hit the seven needed for victory from nine balls.
In the same division, Wisbech 2nd lost by three wickets at Cambridge St Giles 2nd. After deciding to bat, the visitors made a healthy 230-6 from their 45 overs, only for St Giles to snatch victory at the death with 231-7 from 44.4 overs.
In CCA Junior League Four North, Wisbech 3rd conceded the game at Wimblington, whereas March 2nd lost by four wickets at City of Ely 3rd.
After being put into bat, March were 139 all out from 27.2 overs, opener Robert Moden top scoring with 44. Ely reached 140-6 from 35.5 overs, Stuart Mills taking 4-20 from 7.2 overs, and Mark Deas 1-27 from eight.
Wisbech 4th lost by eight wickets at home to Cottenham 2nd in Five North. After electing to bat, the home side were skittled out for just 38 from 20.3 overs, opener Samuel Booty getting 21 of those runs and another 11 coming from extras as five batsmen failed to trouble the scorecard.
Cottenham knocked off 39-2 from 7.1 overs, Alfie Jagger taking 2-5 from two overs.
In the Cambs Women’s Softball League March Marvels beat Newmarket by 46 runs.
Marvels scored 196-2 (Emma Pyle 16, Laura Johnson 15) and Newmarket 150-5 (Laura Johnson 1-14, Kelly Baines 1-21).
Next Saturday, Wisbech travel to play Burwell & Exning (noon start), March are at Huntingdon (noon), Chatteris are at home to Horseheath (1pm) and Wisbech 2nd entertain Milton (1pm).
March 2nd are at home to Burwell & Exing 4th (1pm), Wisbech 3rd travel to play Wilburton 2nd (1pm), Wimblington host Chippenham 2nd, Wisbech 4th are at Cam Kerala 4th (1pm) and Chatteris 2nd are at Ramsey 3rd (1pm).
