March Town salvage a home point but Wisbech Town and Parson Drove lose on the road

It was a poor day for Fenland’s senior football sides as March Town were held at home by the division’s bottom side and Wisbech Town and Parson Drove both lost on the road.

The biggest surprise was in the United Counties League Premier Division South where bottom side Leicester Nirvana took a point at fourth-place March Town with a 1-1 draw.

Mid-table Wisbech Town gave a spirited performance at leaders Sherwood Colliery but the home side still kept up their undefeated home record as they won 2-0 in the United Counties League Premier Division North.

And in the Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties League First Division North, ninth place Parson Drove went down 2-1 to on-form Haverhill Rovers.

It was goalless between March and their lowly visitors at half-time and the division’s bottom side looked on course for their first away win of the season when they scored through William Clarke after 73 minutes.

However, second-half sub Matt Foy scored in the third minute of stoppage time to spare the Hares’ blushes. They stay in fourth position.

Wisbech held the leaders Sherwood in check for much of the first half and went close themselves after 18 minutes when Harry Grigas fired just wide. However, they gave away a penalty three minutes into added-on time when keeper Dan George was adjudged to have impeded Jacob Pearce and it was converted by Craig Westcarr to make it 1-0 at the break.

The Fenmen were far from done though and Toby Allen saw two shots saved in the opening period of the second half, Grigas struck an effort just over after 69 minutes and Andre Williams fired inches wide a minute later.

But Colliery made the visitors pay for those misses when they attacked on the break and Kieran Knight made it 2-0 in the 75th minute. Wisbech slip to 14th in the table but are still 14 points clear of the relegation spot with 12 games remaining.

Over at Haverhill, Harrison Taylor saw an effort for Drove deflected just wide in the 28th minute but the home side took the lead five minutes later when Tom Debenham’s volley was deflected past Chris Brazil in goal.

In the 35th minute, a Drove header hit the bar after a free-kick, but it was 2-0 to Rovers four minutes later when Debenham bundled home his second after a Reece Clarke corner, and that’s the way it stayed at half-time.

The second half was goalless until stoppage time when Drove managed to pull one back through sub Luke Crombie – but it wasn’t enough. Drove stay in ninth place.

Next Saturday, Wisbech Town entertain struggling Newark & Sherwood United, while March Town face a promotion clash at home to title-chasing Wellingborough Town, who beat them 4-2 in Northamptonshire earlier in the season. Parson Drove are without a game.
