Wisbech boss disappointed following his side’s 5-0 thrashing at Lincolnshire rivals Boston Town in United Counties League Premier Division North

Wisbech Town's heavy 5-0 defeat at promotion-chasing Boston Town left manager Luke Hipwell with more questions than answers on Saturday.

The Fenmen were brought back down to earth with a bump in the UCL Premier Division North after picking up four points from their previous two fixtures.

The result was the seventh time in the league this season that Wisbech have conceded five goals in a game.

A disappointed Hipwell said: "I'm having to sit here again and apologise to the supporters for that as it's happened again.

"I have to look at why it has happened again and how we can play with so much spirit, tenacity, courage and heart against Skegness and Newark but then throw up that.

"They are on the crest of a wave and are the form team in the league and I think Chris (Funnell) has done a brilliant job.

"The way they are organised, they have a set game plan and know what they are going to do. They've got really good energy in the middle of the park and they are no-nonsense.

"Jordan Nuttall and Harry Limb were a thorn in our side the whole game. As a two, when they are at it, they are very difficult to handle but we don't help ourselves in terms of conceding poor goals.

"The first one was two-fold really. We missed the first contact, then the second and Harry has got the freedom of Boston in the six-yard box.

"We started to get a bit of a foothold in the game and created some half-chances and their keeper made a good save from Sam (Bennett) to be fair,

"We then conceded a second goal when we were on the attack and that would have disappointed me had it happened in an under-10 game.

"We regrouped a little bit at half-time and then Luke (Wilson) has scored a worldie.

"We played some decent football where we got in behind but then we make some poor decisions when we've got the ball.

"If you make poor decisions in both boxes you are going to concede a few and not score too many and that was the case today.

"We've got to be better at stopping crosses. It's got to be more personal than letting a cross come into the box or if you don't pick up your man, it's just the fundamentals of football.

"It's not about ability, it's not the work rate, it has to be mentality. You can't have two results like we did against Skegness and Newark and just turn up today and think it's going to happen."

Harry Limb haunted his former club by scoring four of the five goals. The Poachers led 2-0 at the break before finding the back three more times in the second half.

The Fenmen remain eight points clear of the relegation spots but Hipwell, whose side entertain Belper United on Saturday, knows there is still much work to do before his side are finally safe.

"A few results went for us and a few didn't but if you keep throwing that up every week then you are going to get drawn back into it and by no stretch of the imagination are we out of it yet," he said.

"We've got eight games left now and we've got to maximise the amount of points that we take. We've got to find a formula where we are compact. I made changes today, but I made changes before Skegness and Newark.

"Fundamentally, if you are not good enough in both boxes you are not going to win football matches.

"If you don't want to make it personal enough, don't want to stop a goal enough or score enough, these are not things individually it's a collective as you defend together and you attack together.

"What I want in my squad is players that are ambitious to do as well as they can for this football club to get it into the best position they can or move on to play at a higher level but you can only do that if you've got the right mentality as an individual.

"None of the goals today were down to anything tactical, they were due to us switching off. I feel for the supporters because they turn up and are probably thinking what are we going to get today - that's not what I want.

"We've got to be at it from minute zero to minute 95 or 96 and the lads have got to see this.

"This is something they get paid for as a second job but if they are not going to treat it like that the reality is that you have to have conversations with people and that doesn't just go for the playing staff that goes for the management staff too, including myself."
