Danny Haynes and Gary Freear also on target against City after half-time deadlock
Wisbech Hockey Club Men’s 1sts 5 Norwich City 1
Wisbech knew they desperately needed three points against bottom of the league opposition, but after a last minute call-off they struggled to focus and get into the game and found themselves 1-0 down on Saturday.
An extremely poor first half featured a singular moment of class, from Hugo Atkins, who beat some defenders before finishing on his reverse stick from an extremely tight angle to make it 1-1 at half-time.
The team talk was focussed on the fact that Wisbech hadn’t really started playing and an increase of 15 to 20 per cent was all that was required to take the game.
A slight tactical tweak meant that the trio of Danny Haynes, Paul Lawrence and Charlie Baxter were able to hunt down the Norwich midfield with much more effectiveness and began to create many more chances through relentless pressure.
It was soon 2-1 as Atkins deflected in from a short corner, and Gary Freear made it three with an excellent finish. Norwich had no answer to the Wisbech intensity, and goals from Atkins and Haynes finished the game with a comfortable and well deserved scoreline of 5-1. Some excellent performances across the pitch.
MoM: Charlie Baxter.
Cambs Uni 5
Wisbech Ladies 1st 2
Wisbech started brightly at a very windy Wiberforce Road, looking more composed on the ball than in recent weeks.
They found themselves behind after 15 minutes from a very well-worked, deflected finish by Uni. Wisbech looked to hang in there creating the occasional opportunity to spring forward in attack, led by the lively Ellie Padmore who worked tirelessly all game. Unfortunately for Wisbech they conceded three goals in 10 minutes towards the end of the half. Half-time: Cambs Uni 4 Wisbech ladies 0.
Credit to the ladies; they came out with fight and determination spearheaded by terrific work rate from Jane Peggs and the ability to get Laura Overland into the game. It was the latter who beat two, drove into the D to find Baker, who squared for Pritchard to tap in for a deserved goal.
Minutes later Overland picked the ball up 25 metres out and beat four players to find the top right hand corner from just inside the D.
Uni scored again shortly after as hopes faded but the ladies never gave up, with great defending and goal line clearances by Dunn and Overland.
PoM: Ellie Padmore.
Wisbech Ladies 2nds 0 Bury 2’s 6
Another tough game for the ladies but this did not stop the home side from getting stuck in from the start.
A short corner from Bury was their only goal going in to half-time and this was due to some excellent saves in goal by Ali Mason.
The team kept their heads up soaking up all the pressure, however, Bury came on strong in the second half netting five more. Well done to the whole team it being a difficult week for availability again.
PoM: Lorraine Parker.
