'Lashings' of talent on show as Wisbech do battle with World XI during big fundraiser
A host of famous names from the world of cricket were in town on Friday as Wisbech Town Cricket Club took on the Lashings World XI.
An impressive marquee was erected and guests enjoyed a three-course meal, a silent auction and other fundraising activities for the 'Crockey' project to raise money for a new 3G pitch and pavilion for Wisbech Hockey Club, who are partnered with the cricket club.
Either side of the meal, those present were treated to superb entertainment by Lashings owner Scott Charlton and MC Roger Dakin. And in the morning local youngsters received expert coaching from the Lashings players.
They included former England test bowlers John Emburey, Chris Schofield, Chris Lewis and Martin Bicknell and batsmen Usman Afzaal and Owais Shah.
Ex-West Indies batsman Kirk Edwards, former Pakistan bowlers Yasir Arafat and Ata-ur-Rehman and ex-South African bowler Charl Willoughby made up the hall of fame, with former England Physical Disability cricket player and Love Island contestant Hugo Hammond also playing.
Club ambassador and former West Indies opener Gordon Greenidge was also present and the game itself was commentated on by legendary broadcaster Henry Blofeld.
As in 2018, Lashings narrowly won the 20/20 match, with the excitement going down to the final over. After the match there were closing presentations and a disco.
