Wisbech Town lost on penalties at the Louth Walking Football Tournament

Penalty woes struck down Wisbech Town at the Louth Walking Football Tournament.

After late injuries and other unforeseen issues, the travelling Fenmen only had six players for the six-a-side tournament - with Manager Jonny Pearce standing in as a substitute.

They kicked things off against Alford A, with the returning Scott Sawers netting twice to secure a 2-0 win.

Wisbech then renewed their rivalry with hosts Louth, with a tight affair ending up as a 0-0 stalemate after Darren McManus had a penalty saved.

McManus redeemed himself in the following game against Gainsborough, however, with his strike sealing a hard-earned 1-0 victory.

The Fenmen's final group game was against a Charity Case side made up of Boston United and Wisbech players, with Martin Beasant and Simon Gant helping to make up their numbers.

Sawers again opened the scoring with a fierce effort, before Rich Mellor rounded off the victory.

After topping their group, Stamford were up next for Wisbech - and in a sign of what was to come, Sawers missed another penalty. However, he and Steve Wyness both scored to send their side into the semi-finals.

However, the lottery of a penalty shootout loomed after a draw against Grimsby Ancient Mariners. Wayne Beasant let in his first goal of the afternoon, before Wyness levelled things up with just two minutes remaining.

Wisbech were 2-1 up after four penalties, but missed their next two to crash out before the final.

They then played in the plate final against Louth A, but they again lost out on penalties after a fiery-tempered 0-0 draw.
