Formula 1 driver George Russell on his performance in the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona

Tydd St Giles racing driver George Russell felt satisfied with his performance in the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday.

Russell finished the race in 14th spot after some strong mid-field tussles which saw the 23-year-old pushing for a place in the points.

He had moved up to 10th place by the latter stages of the race but unfortunately was unable hold onto his points-scoring position.

Russell said: “We have to be satisfied with the job we did.

“The car in the race felt good and I felt really confident. However, the result doesn’t quite reflect that as we started in 15th place and finished 14th.

“We were so close to a much better result and hopefully we can have more of these race weekends.
To be battling there on merit was a great job.”

Russell had endured a difficult start as he dropped back two places to 17th but was soon able to reclaim a place from ‍Haas’ Mick Schumacher.

An early safety car for the stricken Alpha Tauri of Yuki Tsunoda offered the British driver the opportunity for an early pit stop after only 10 laps of the 66 lap race as he swapped his soft (C3) compound Pirelli tyres for the medium (C2) compound before rejoining the race in 17th spot.

Once the safety car was removed, Russell wasted little time, slipping his FW43-B machine ahead of the Haas duo and into 15th spot.

As the laps ticked down and they approached the middle of the race, Russell capitalised on the rest of the field opted to pit for their first stop, moving him into seventh before pitting for his second stop of the race for fresh medium tyres.

With fresh rubber and other drivers yet to pit for a second stop, Russell moved up into 10th place in the latter stages of the race, behind Alpine’s Fernando Alonso in ninth.

However, he was then passed by a flurry of drivers and ended the race in Barcelona in 14th place.

Russell added: “We were on the one-stop and the guys around us were on the two-stop.

“I was battling with Fernando (Alonso) trying to pass him and the guys behind me were on the brand-new soft tyres which were much faster.

“As soon as I got passed by one, they all came past. The tyres were on the limit, I was on the limit and the car was on the limit.

“That was the maximum and I am really pleased we opted with that strategy as it gave us half a chance.”
