Wisbech swimmers head to final after Junior Fenland League victory at Thetford
Wisbech Swimming Club continued its run of excellence in the Junior Fenland League with a fifth-round victory at Thetford.
The club goes into the October 19 ‘A’ Final with Boston Swimming Club its only real rival for the title.
After a fierce competition against City of Peterborough ‘A’ at Thetford and post-gala adjudication, Wisbech emerged victorious on 186 points, 19 ahead of Peterborough, with Thetford third on 125; the result leaves Wisbech the only unbeaten team going into the final.
The swimmers won 18 events on the night, including three for Zoe Wilson and two each for Thomas Baxter, Ebony Smith and Joshua Jones. They also achieved 26 new personal best times out of 44 races.
Wisbech Swimming Club has enjoyed a busy September, with three swimmers taking on the South East National Masters Open Water 3km on the opening day.
David Hammond and Jodie Hopkisson joined club chairman Matt Hunter for a tough swim that saw Hopkisson take the bronze medal in the 45-49 years category.
The club’s Senior Fenland League team was in action during September 7’s ‘A’ Final at Newmarket, going into the event fourth in the league and emerging third after a strong performance that include ten event wins.
Rounding out the month, Wisbech visited Boston for the Anglian League final, securing second place, ten points behind Boston, on 155 points, but comfortably ahead of March Marlins on 137.
The Wisbech team secured nine event first places, including two for Louisa Rowell.
