March Vets rugby side beat Thorney Vets 33-7
March Vets put their Thorney counterparts to the sword as they earned a 33-7 win.
The latter were a far bigger and heavier side, but mobility and speed rested with March.
This was a tough game which was officiated by 79-year-old John Hanlon.
It was an evenly-matched opening 25 minutes, with neither side giving away on the tackle – but then Lee Kupyn took a ball just inside his own half and accelerated away to go in under the posts.
Sam Howat then converted.
Thorney, however, managed to get back an equaliser just before half-time when a loose maul was propelled forward and they went over.
This try was also converted, making the half-time score 7-7.
It took until 10 minutes after the break for Bryn Pughsley to score the first of a hat-trick of tries when a very good back move saw him go over the line – and again Sam Howat converted.
And 17 minutes later, Pughsley on a repeat move went over for his second – and this took it to 21-7 after Howat converted.
Three minutes later, Lee Kupyn managed to get the second of his tries – repeating his first class breakaway try.
Sam Howat did the honours with the conversion.
The Thorney pack was tiring, and so a third try in a matter of five minutes was scored by Pughsley when, after making multiple dummy passes, he went over the line to complete both his hat-trick and a good day for the Vets.
