Wisbech Grammar School are crowned champions of athletics
Wisbech Grammar School competed and were crowned champions in the Isle of Ely District athletics competition held at Lynnsport in King’s Lynn on Thursday.
The school was up against six other schools including King’s Ely, City of Ely, Thomas Clarkson, March Neale-Wade, Chatteris Cromwell Community College, and Witchford Village College. The event included year 7, 8, 9 and 10, boys and girls. WGS took 64 pupils who competed in a full range of Olympic athletic events.
Standout performances and winners were - Year 7: Lewis Shipley (Wisbech St Mary) won 800m and triple jump; Abbey Piccover (Spalding) won 200m and 800m; and Tia Bideau (King’s Lynn) won the 70m hurdles.
Year 8: Jack Robb (Wisbech) won the 800m; Tanveer Sira (Wisbech) won the hurdles; Angus Flint (Wisbech) won the discus; Issy Pope (Wisbech) won the 100m and the long jump; Rosie Muspratt (King’s Lynn) won the 800m; Jessica Reed-Else (Wisbech) won the 1500m; Charlotte Mair (March) won the 75m hurdles. Year 9: Haydn Buffham (Wisbech) won the 80m hurdles; Ophelia Griffiths (Wisbech) won 1500m; Lucy Lim (King’s Lynn) won the 75m hurdles; Isabella Oldershaw-Ellis (Spalding) won shot and discus.
Year 10: George Lemon (King’s Lynn) won 100m; Jack Trundley (King’s Lynn) won the 400m and the 800m. Sam Birch (March) won the high jump; Will Lankfer (Wisbech) won the discus.
As a result of the performances in this competition, the following pupils have been selected for the District Athletics Team due to compete at the County Championship on June 11 - Year 7: Lewis Shipley; Abbey Piccover; George Gowler. Year 8 & 9: Issy Pope; Rosie Muspratt; Ophelia Griffiths; Lucy Lim; Charlotte Mair; Haydn Buffham; Annie Bennett; Isabella Oldershaw-Ellis. Year 10: George Lemon; Jack Trundley; Genevieve Tibbett; Fraser Brown; Tom Collie; Sam Birch; Ellie Payne-English; Will Lankfer.
Head of athletics, Mrs Sally Webb, said: “This is a wonderful result for Wisbech Grammar School. It was a fantastic team effort which secured the overall win. Well done to everyone who competed.”
