Wisbech Town Under-18s looking for talented youngsters to play under Tansel Ibrahim and Mika Zemdega
Wisbech Town are on the hunt for talented youngsters as they look to rejuvenate their under-18 side.
The Fenmen are hoping to establish a pathway between their youth squad and the first team - with former Wisbech Town Acorns boss Tansel Ibrahim and Mika Zemdega the men in charge.
Players aged 15, 16 or no older than 17 on August 31 are being urged to go along for a trial with the under-18s, who will be playing in the 2022/23 Thurlow Nunn Youth League.
Ibrahim (45), who played professionally abroad and previously coached at a London academy, said he hopes to assemble a squad of players who can compete in that league.
“We’ll build it up from there, really,” he told the Citizen.
“Ideally, the players that we get in will have ambitions of playing a better standard of football and, of course, trying to break into the first team.
“It might take a gradual process - for example, breaking into the reserves and then pushing on into the first team.
“I think it’s very important. The gaffer is interested in trying to bring local talent through, and we’re going to try and help that process.”
First team manager Allan Ross has previously spoken of his ambitions to have young players from the Wisbech area form the backbone of his future squads.
That was one of the reasons behind holding an open training session on June 18, which the manager said went well.
Ibrahim himself is excited to be in joint-charge of the new side, and is already preparing for the new campaign.
“I’m looking forward to it, because it’s going to be a challenge,” he said.
“We’re building from scratch again. We’re trying to recruit players, so we’ll see how it goes.
“We’ll try our best, and look forward to the challenge.”

In other news for the Fenmen, the first team have been handed a home tie in the United Counties League Cup.
Ross’ side will face off against Birstall United, who play in Division One of the UCL.
The clash is scheduled to take place in early October.
Wisbech’s first full first team friendly is set to take place on July 16 at home to Swaffham Town - with players gearing up for their first campaign back in the UCL Premier Division North.
