March 2nd Xl v Wimblington, Sunday, September 9

Wimblington foiled March Sunday 2nd XI’s attempt to reach the Ernie Wool Cup final, when they were beaten by 30 runs at The Avenue.

The Fenland Trophy champions were expected to go through, but the visitors bowled well and held some good catches for only their second victory of the season.

Batting first, Wimblington made 109-7 from their 40 overs, with March skipper Sam Mason taking 3-17 and vice-skipper Shae Pooley 2-20.

Small totals are never easy and March proved that point by hitting the ball in the air far too often. Mason came in late in the order and at one stage his 25 runs looked as though they would deprive Wimblington of a deserved victory. But it wasn’t to be!

Wimblington 109-7, 40 overs (Sam Mason 3-17, Shae Pooley 2-20), March 2nd XI 89 all out, 25.3 overs (Sam Mason 25, Jim Chapman 16, Alex Oldham 15).

March Man of the Match: Sam Mason.

March 3rd Xl v Witcham,

The curtain came down on the 3rd XI’s season in CCA Junior League Division 3N, but not before ‘Golden Oldie’ Dennis Furnell smashed an unbeaten 72 in the three wicket defeat at Witcham.

It was the opening batsman’s highest score of the campaign and made up the bulk of March’s 168-5 total in a match reduced to 35 overs per side.

Manuj Patel weighed in with 27 runs, with Rob Pooley scoring 19 and Anthony Henson 16no.

There were two wickets apiece for Stuart Arnold, Sam Mason and Pate, as the home side won with four balls remaining.

March 3rd XI 168-5, 35 overs (Furnell 72, Patel 27, Pooley 19, Henson 16no), Witcham 171-7, 34.2 overs (Stuart Arnold 2-13, Sam Mason 2-24, Manuj Patel 2-29).
