Don't Worry Darling review: Is living the American dream really that good?
FILM REVIEW: DON'T WORRY DARLING (15): SEEN AT THE LIGHT CINEMA WISBECH
CAST: FLORENCE PUGH, HARRY STYLES, OLIVIA WILDE, CHRIS PINE, NICK KROLL, GEMMA CHAN, SYDNEY CHANDLER, KIKI LANE, & DOUGLAS SMITH
RUNNING TIME: 2 HR 3 MINS DIRECTOR: OLIVIA WILDE
Olivia Wilde’s second directorial debut didn’t fail to impress with a jaw dropping narrative that you couldn’t see coming. The all star cast features Marvels Florence Pugh who played the lead as Alice Chambers, accompanied by pop legend, turned actor Harry Styles playing her husband Jack. The duo were joined by Chris Pine, Gemma Chan and Wilde herself featured playing Alice’s best friend Bunny.
The beginning of this movie begins as a portrayal of a raw, hot and passionate version of the 1950’s American dream. Jack and Alice are a young attractive couple enjoying a child-free life. Styles, the breadwinner, disappears off to his mysterious job at the victory project while Alice runs the home as a traditional housewife. Or so it seems…
However, the plot of the movie dramatically changes throughout with an unpredictable move which sees the American dream becomes the American nightmare.
Florence Pugh strikes gold once again with her performance showing every emotion you can think of whilst Alice lives out some pretty delusional nightmares.
She portrays a diturbing performance where you want to look away, but can’t.
I’ve followed Pugh’s career for many years now after seeing her play selfish little sister Amy March in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women back in 2019. Pugh has a way of making you like the character she plays. She has an incredible ability to show emotions without the use of the script, her face says it all.
Harry Styles makes some incredible music and he did contribute to music in this film. But I’m not fully convinced that he’s on par with his colleagues. Florence’s performance overshined Styles’.
However, he really looked the part, and some scenes were delivered well. Hopefully his acting will improve by the time he is fully submerged in the Marvel universe.
Everything else in this film was magnificent, music, costumes and most importantly the plot. I’m really hoping for a sequel to this movie to solve some unanswered questions.
