Police efforts recognised at Wisbech Town Council meeting but more ‘dangerous’ concerns raised
Town councillors recognised the efforts of police at their meeting on Monday evening but said they still have concerns for Wisbech.
At the meeting of Wisbech Town Council, they praised the support they have received from police helping to tackle speeding drivers but new concerns were raised about drug dealing and parking.
Cllr Peter Human congratulated the police on the speed monitors on Churchill Road before the Christmas period.
He said: “I think I counted four of them and it is good to see them doing this after requests from the town council and I think we should pass on our thanks and gratitude.”
However, Cllr Steve Tierney had two issues to raise. One included having to attend to a report from a resident in town about some dropped syringes down the alleyway that runs off King’s Road and serves the properties on Alexandra Road and Prince’s Road.
He said: “There were about 12 syringes with some open and some closed, which I cleared.
“The residents told me that quite regularly drug users are down those alleyways when the lights are out.”
He said he would like the police to help put a stop to this as “residents are worried about it”.
The other issue he raised was people parking along the cycle paths and the memorial in Wisbech.
He said: “We know that parking is out of control and the police are not doing enough.
“I think we have to draw the line here, parking along the pavement around the Clarkson Memorial – it looks horrible, it ruins the look of a beautiful memorial.
“So can someone please tell the police as a matter of urgency to get down there and serve some tickets so people stop doing it?”
Cllr Tierney was backed by a member of the public who also raised concerns about parking.
Mr Drew said parking in Wisbech is bad, “especially Clarkson Memorial, but there are a number of locations - including the Cresent and North Brink - where there is a job to get emergency services through, ambulance, fire engines and even police sometimes.
“In High Street they have put all the double yellow lines down but it is a total waste of time and money. The police do give out tickets but not enough.”
He also named many more and said: “What would it be like if Wisbech didn't have their free car parks? If people had to pay it would be ten times worse.
“It is dangerous more than anything.”
