Maggie is recovering well at the RSPCA's Block Fen Centre after losing her leg
The RSPCA at Block Fen near Wimblington has issued a massive thank-you to people after they rallied to donate towards the care of a badly injured dog.
Posting their thanks on Facebook a spokesman for Block Fen said: "On August 11, a dog was transferred to us from a private veterinary surgery. She had been handed in to them, by an anonymous person, with the most horrific injuries.
"If you recall, the weather at the beginning of August had been extremely warm and her untreated injuries had become badly infected.
"Her front right leg was entirely rotten and barely attached to her body, the muscles had been ripped and she was covered in what appear to be dog bite wounds with straw stuck in them. She couldn’t stand and had clearly been suffering for some time.
"Everyone knew the dog we were expecting had arrived because we could smell her leg all through the centre. Even our most experienced staff struggled with what was in front of them.
"Nine days on, we have operated to amputate the leg and we have managed to get on top of the infection. We have started to see a wonderful little character in our patient and we have turned a corner.
"We can’t always share our work with you as it is happening because of the investigations going on in the background but rest assured, we are here working hard to care for the animals who need us most.
"Maggie the dog has been saved by our vet Jonathan and nursed every day (even on her days off) by Tammy, our vet nurse. Maggie has been through a huge trauma but she hasn’t once complained and is clearly a little fighter, she had such a determined little face when she was learning to walk again on three legs.
"Our best guess is that she is a Staffie x Border Terrier. She is microchipped and this is being investigated, we really want to take this opportunity to remind you to make sure your contact details are up to date with the relevant microchip database."
