Music For All group celebrates two years of success at St Mary’s Church Hall Long Sutton
A social group that brings people together through music has gone from strength to strength since it reformed two years ago.
Sandra Whatling runs Music For All at St Mary’s Church Hall in Long Sutton and on Tuesday (November 26) the group was entertained by singer Andy Phoenyx who provided live music to people who may be bereaved, lonely, or living with dementia and disabilities.
The fortnightly session, helped by volunteers, attracts more than 100 attendees for dancing, chatting, and a singalong - with the next taking place on Tuesday, December 10 (2pm-4pm).
Mrs Whatling said: “The group has gone from success to success to success.
“People come in and say how much they have enjoyed it.
“The atmosphere is wonderful and it brightens people’s spirits.”
It is free entry to come along and the group is funded by proceeds from the raffle, teas, coffees and refreshments.
Some people who are in care homes come along and it allows their carer a couple of hours of respite.
Acts who entertain at the group range from country singers to 50s 60s and 70s rock and roll.
they remember all the songs.
“Some people who are bereaved say the group has saved them from loneliness.
“The music may make them cry sometimes but they have made friends.”
The group is welcoming to those who may feel shy or have mental health issues too.
Mrs Whatling added: “Some people just do not get out to socialise from one fortnight to the next apart from maybe to the shops.
“Once people have been for the first time there are familiar faces that are welcoming.”
