Pensioner hurt in Fenland airplane crash

A pensioner had a lucky escape after suffering only minor injuries a light aircraft crashed in Benwick yesterday (Sunday).

The crash happened at about 4.20pm near the Fenland village.

The East Anglian Air Ambulance, and crews from the East of England Ambulance service were called to the scene.

A spokesman for Cambridgeshire police said: “We were called by the ambulance service at 4.30pm yesterday.

“A light air craft had come down in a field near Floods Ferry Road in Benwick.

“It had crashed near to a wind turbine.

“The man suffered minor injuries.”

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 4.24pm.

“The East Anglian Air Ambulance, an ambulance and a rapid response vehicle.

“One patient, a man in his 70s, had suffered injuries. He was taken to Peterborough City Hospital by land ambulance.”

A spokeswoman for Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said they were called to the event, but were not required to take any action at the scene.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) are investigating the incident.
