Wisbech Town Council clerk Terry Jordan discusses upcoming events and change to town market at latest council meeting

An event is to be held at Wisbech Park on May 8 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE-Day, Wisbech Town Councillors were told at their meeting on Monday.

It is anticipated there will be music and other activities from 5pm onwards in the park including the lighting of the beacon at 9.30pm. The event is being organised by the town council in conjunction with the Royal British Legion.

The announcement was made during town clerk Terry Jordan’s report, where it was also reported that members of the Wisbech Town Centre Committee have issued a new contract for the time the market closes which will take effect from February 10.

The market closing time has been brought forward to 2pm from 3pm for the months of November to February inclusive.

Currently, the town has trading activity every day of the week with Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays the busiest. The activity on Thursdays and Sundays is supplemented by car booting.

Mr Jordan said: “That has gone down very well with the traders and a majority are leaving at 2pm on those days with some staying behind – that seems to be working very well.

“At the December 16 meeting of the town centre committee, it was decided that consideration is to be given to the future meetings of the committee as a means of contributing to the town centre for arranging a programme of themed markets and that is something we are mindful of as the town needs more activities in the town centre.

“It will draw people into the town centre and we are looking for opportunities to do that when we can.”

Mr Jordan also discussed the banning of lighting bonfires on allotments that was put into place at the last gathering of the Environment Public Spaces Committee.

He added: “We have had a small number of representations from individuals which the committee will be considering next Monday.”

In terms of events, Mr Jordan acknowledged the “very successful light switch-on”, on December 1 that saw “a huge party crowd” with feedback being positive.

“Unfortunately the Christmas fair was cancelled due to forecasted extreme weather conditions but the plans for next year's event which will take place on December 14, will begin on March 4”, he said.
