UKIP’s Richard Mandley scraped home to hold on to the party’s Chatteris Cambridgeshire County Council seat by just 10 votes over the Tories in yesterday’s by-election.

Nigel Farage’s party was defending a slim majority of just five from the 2013 elections.

But Conservative Alan Melton was unable to win the seat from UKIP despite a strong challenge in the contest following the death of previous UKIP councillor Sandra Rylance in August following losing her fight against an inoperable brain tumour.

Voting was: Richard Mandley (United Kingdom Independence Party) 600, Alan Melton (Con) 590, John Freeman (Lib Dem), 274.
