United as Wisbech church closes after 205 years of worship in the town

Sunday was a remarkably sad day for one group of churchgoers in Wisbech.

After 205 years the United Reformed Church in Castle Square has closed its doors for the last time.

The service saw visitors from other churches join with the regular congregation and church leaders.

The closure follows a decision made in February, ironically on the day that was in fact the church’s 205th anniversary, and has been blamed on falling numbers.

Sunday afternoon’s service was one of thanksgiving and celebration for the life of the church which opened its doors in 1818 at a time when the town of Wisbech was expanding.

Just as on Sunday the opening service also saw members from other churches joining the congregation.
