Wisbech Town Councillor resigns

A Wisbech Town Councillor has resigned after a post he made on Facebook commenting about the government's latest advice on measures to control covid-19 was shared on a community page.

Philip Wing was an independent councillor after being expelled from the Conservative party in January this year following a lengthy investigation into allegations of bullying and stalking against him from a fellow female councillor, were upheld.

The announcement of his resignation came in a post today (Friday) by the town council on its Facebook, which stated : "Today, Independent Councillor Philip Wing has resigned his membership of Wisbech Town Council.

"Notice of Vacancy will be published shortly."

A further post added: "Unfortunately, Mr Wing is not obligated to provide a reason for his resignation as the town council is not obligated to disclose it."

However, it appears the post about his comments attached to a picture of a government poster on the coronavirus were behind his decision. In it he implied a swear word and said: "It's becoming dystopian. I am complying for now ... but how many more orders before a revolt."

The post on Fenland Political Scene said: "I really didn't expect to read this comment from a Wisbech Town Councillor, not what I expect from any councillor representing our town.

"When will they learn to keep their comments to themselves unless it's to put Wisbech in a good light - some need to stand down, sort out their issues and then stand again if they think they can offer something positive to the town."

Mr Wing simply commented: "I am ..., I'm fed up of being trolled. Good day."
