Chatteris Tennis Club enjoy 2023 Rickwood Cup Mixed Doubles Trophy

In glorious September sunshine, members of Chatteris Tennis Club enjoyed friendly competition for the Rickwood Cup Mixed Doubles Trophy.

This is the club’s late summer members tournament, and it was watched by crowd of enthusiastic spectators.

The tournament’s participants reflected the diversity of talent at the club, with male league team members paired in a round robin format with three different lady, junior or senior partners.

The highest scoring four then competed in the final.

It was then that Joseph Fitches, the youngest player in the competition, demonstrated his exceptional talent as a 10-year-old when, partnered by John Freeman, he overcame his dad Tim, partnered by Dave Wing, aged 70, the oldest competitor in the tournament, to lift the trophy.

The event organised by club secretary Kathryn Booth, assisted by club chairman Simon Grainger and match secretary Matt Sizer. It concluded with a wonderful barbecue cooked by Jamie Chilcott, helped by his 14-year-old son Josh and 16-year-old Ollie Appleby.

All those who ensured the event was such a success play regularly for the club in league matches, as do many of the participants – a significant number of whom have risen from first joining the club as juniors or adult beginners.
