Wisbech Town Walking FC won the Peterborough & District Walking Football League title after beating Netherton A twice at the weekend
Wisbech Town Walking FC romped to two victories on their way to sealing a first league title.
The Fenmen went into their final two games of the Peterborough & District Walking Football League campaign knowing maximum points would hand them the trophy.
They duly dusted off any pre-match nerves and sealed a 7-1 and 9-0 double-triumph over Netherton A at the weekend.
Things weren't so rosy at the start of the day, however, with Jonny Pearce's side missing two key players through illness.
Striker Scott Sawyers is in hospital with pneumonia, while goalkeeper John Knight was also taken into care on Friday night.
Their team-mates went out to do them proud, though, and seen a number of early efforts on the Netherton goal beaten away by a combination of their goalkeeper and the woodwork.
Wisbech could have taken the lead after being awarded a penalty, but Steve Wyness seen his spot-kick pushed away from danger.
Just a matter of minutes later, he was punished when Netherton fired past Martin Beasant to take the lead.
It was a lead that didn't last long, however, and Rich Mellor equalised soon afterwards. Another Bellis strike was followed up by a Ben Baylis finish to give the Fenmen a two-goal cushion going into half-time.
Baylis extended his side's advantage early in the second half, before David Frosdick made it 5-1. Mellor completed his hat-trick and grabbed another to make it 7-1 at full-time.
Wisbech then headed back out to play the same opposition for a second time, and were even more ruthless.
Mellor again put his side on the front-foot, before Wyness fired an effort into the top corner to double the advantage early on.
Baylis got in on the action, and a Frosdick brace put the title within touching distance.
Wyness made it 6-0, before Wyness completed his hat-trick in the second half.
Wayne Beasant grabbed a late double to add gloss to the scoreline, and celebrations ensued at the full-time whistle.
Boss Jonny Pearce said: "I am overwhelmed with what we have achieved.
"I asked the players to be brave, believe in what we are doing and to keep playing our style of football and I can’t fault them, they have put everything into this, they work hard in training and today they got what they deserve.
"We have won a couple of tournaments, but that’s how you play on the day and the luck of the draw, but to win a league you have to be at your best consistently against all opposition and that is the real test that I’m pleased these lads have come through.
"I have a great group of players here and I’m looking forward to what the future holds for us as a club.
"I would also like to thank everyone who sent us good luck messages, it is appreciated by us all.
