Mid-table finish in United Counties League Premier Division North would be a significant marker for Wisbech Town

Leon Mettam knows that it will be a significant marker if his side can achieve a mid-table finish this season considering where the Fenmen began the campaign.

The Wisbech Town boss has been encouraged by the upturn in results and performances over the last few weeks as his side look to finish their United Counties Premier Division North campaign with a flourish.

Mettam’s side have recorded back-to-back wins in the last few days with league leaders Loughborough and Heanor both being beaten at Fountain Fresh Park.

Now, with five games to go, a mid-table finish for the Fenmen is looking a distinct possibility.

Next up is a trip to Leicester Nirvana on Saturday and Mettam said: “We’re 13th now, we’re safe and that was our goal at the start of the season.

“It was all about steadying the ship and building as we went and I think we’ve done that.

“A mid-table finish would be a huge win for Brooksy (Danny Brooks), Peds (Alex Street), myself and the fans and we can’t complain at that.

“Finishing as high as we can would be a massive plus. I think we’ve got five games left and just two away.

“If we put in performances like we have done here the last two home games and win three of those that’ll probably take us to where we want to be.

“I don’t think we’ve got anyone above 12th to play so there’s no reason why we can’t finish well if we’re at the races, it’s just about what Wisbech turns up on the day.

“We’ve been brilliant, we can be rubbish or somewhere in between which would be handy on a more regular basis but we’re getting there.

“You know, nights like Tuesday and days like today help because it gives the lads confidence to build and go on again.”

Mettam heaped praise on teenage frontman Harley Murkin, 16, who scored the winning goal at the weekend before being sent-off for picking up two yellow cards.

“If you’re good enough, then you’re old enough,” said Mettam.

“If you are good enough for the level then you play. What I don’t want to do is chuck him in every week and rely on a 16-year-old, because if he does have a bad one , you might lose him for three or four games with his head not being right.

“It’s about drip feeding them in slowly so they keep wanting more and that’s what I’m trying to do with Harley.

“He can be whatever he wants to be, he’s just got to keep improving, learning and listening, which he is doing.

“He won’t sleep tonight and will be buzzing all night long.

“ I remember what I was like when I scored my first goal in the league, I was wide awake for two nights just wanting more.”
