Wisbech Town on a roll as striker Bacon returns

Wisbech Town’s bid for silverware this season has been given a massive boost by the return of striker Chris Bacon.

Former favourite Bacon is back at the Elgoods Stadium having been top scorer for the Fenmen back in 2011-12 with 32 goals.

Wisbech boss Brett Whaley said: “Signing Chris a fantastic boost for us with some big games coming up.

“When somebody like him becomes available, you just make it happen.

“He was a hero here before and is a massive signing.

“I believe that the likes of Jack Defty and Chris are two of the best strikers to have played Step Five football.

“Chris isn’t just a targetman, he is a very clever footballer and I expect him to score goals and create plenty of chances for others.

“He brings bags of experience at the top end of the field and to get him back is just huge.

“With Stuart Wall set to return to the side soon, the spine of our side will be very experienced, which is vital at any level of football.”

Bacon lifted the supporters’ player of the season award at Wisbech in 2011/12 after his sizzling campaign in front of goal.

“Financially, he had better offers elsewhere but Chris displayed an interest in singing for us,” admitted Whaley.

“He has a really good attitude and he wanted to come back to a club where he feels really at home.”

Bacon, 31, parted company with Cambridge City in the summer after registering 12 goals in all competitions for the Step Three outfit last season.

His arrival comes on the back of the departure of Charley Sanders, who has joined Spalding.

“Charley came here with a really good reputation but we haven’t had any problems with him whatsoever,” said Whaley.

“I hope it really works out for him at Spalding.

“With Charley leaving it just goes to show how strong our squad is if we are losing players to go and play at a higher level.”

Bacon is set to make his return for the Fenmen in their top-of-the-table clash at Yaxley tonight.

The frontman has also played for King’s Lynn (both incarnations), Mildenhall Town, Dereham Town and Grantham Town.

While playing abroad, Bacon turned out for Sunshine Coast Fire (Australia), Canterbury City and Cashmere Technical (both New Zealand).
